The realistic representation of tropical convection in our global atmospheric models is a long-standing grand challenge for both weather forecasting and climate prediction. Our insufficient fundamental knowledge and practical capabilities in this area leaves us disadvantaged in modeling and predicting prominent phenomena such as ENSO, monsoons, intraseasonal variability, easterly-waves, and tropical cyclones, all of which greatly impact society.

The Year of Tropical Convection (YOTC), coordinated jointly by the WMO's World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP)/THORPEX is focused on  tropical convection,  its multiscale organization, and global interactions. The integrated framework of YOTC  exploits  the vast pool of existing observations, the expanding computational resources, and new high-resolution modeling.  The strategic science objective is to advance the characterization, diagnosis, modeling, parameterization and prediction of multiscale convective-dynamical interactions. The Asian Monsoon Years (AMY 2007-2012) is an observation and modeling effort coordinated jointly by WCRP and the WWRP/Monsoon Panel. The strategic goal of AMY is to improve Asian monsoon prediction for societal benefit through coordinated efforts to improve our understanding of Asian monsoon variability and predictability. It is recognized that cooperation with individual participating and partner projects will facilitate efforts to reach this goal.

The YOTC International Science Symposium and the 8th Asian Monsoon Years (AMY) Workshop will explore scientific overlap between weather and climate (seamless prediction) in the context of intraseasonal tropical variability and convection-wave interaction;  variability and predictability of the monsoon system; tropical-extratropical interaction; easterly waves and tropical cyclones; and the diurnal cycle.
